What is Puff Pastry?

Puff Pastry is a type of dough made from flour, water, salt, and butter. When you bake it, it puffs up and becomes light and flaky, making it perfect for both sweet and savory dishes. You can usually find it pre-made in the frozen section of your grocery store, often near the frozen pie crusts.

When working with puff pastry, the key is to avoid letting it get too warm. If you’re thawing it from frozen, make sure not to leave it out at room temperature for too long. You can let it sit for about 30-40 minutes just to warm up enough for rolling. If it gets too warm, it becomes tricky to handle and won’t puff up nicely in the oven.

If you need a substitute for puff pastry, crescent roll dough can work in a pinch, though we think puff pastry tastes and feels better. We wouldn’t recommend using phyllo dough, as it’s too flaky and doesn’t have the right texture to hold the heaviness of the cheese and asparagus in this recipe.

Ingredients you will need:

Gather these simple ingredients to make Asparagus and Brie Puff Pastry Wraps:

  • 1-2 bundles of asparagus stalks*, trimmed
  • 2 sheets puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 lemon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 8 ounces of brie cheese, cut into 8 slices
  • 1 egg, beaten

RECIPE NOTES: The thickness of asparagus stalks vary during different times of the year. If your stalks are thick, you can use 2 per pastry and yield more servings. If they are on the thinner side use 3-4 stalks per pastry and you may need more asparagus. This recipe can easily be doubled or tripled depending on how my servings you need.

How to make Asparagus and Brie Puff Pastry Wraps:

Start by preheating your oven to 375°F and lining a baking sheet with parchment paper.

In a bowl, mix the 1-2 bundles of asparagus with 1 tablespoon olive oil, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/4 teaspoon and 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper.

Roll out the 2 sheets of puff pastry on a floured surface and cut them into 8 squares. Place a slice of 1 slice of brie on each square, then add a handful of asparagus. Drizzle with freshly squeezed lemon juice.

Fold two corners of the pastry over the asparagus to seal it up.

Move them to the lined baking sheet and do the same with the rest. Brush each pastry with egg wash, then bake them in the oven for 15-20 minutes until they’re golden brown.

Once the pastries are out of the oven, serve them warm.

Recipe addition:

You can top with a drizzle of hot honey. Hot honey is optional, and it adds a touch of spicy sweetness.
